NEW ROUND OF SEVERE WEATHER OVER THE HIGH PLAINS TO ARKLATEX REGION AccuWeather.com
State College, Pa. -- May 6, 2008 -- AccuWeather.com reports a first round of strong storms moved through the Plains overnight. Large hail and damaging winds spread across the High Plains of Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas, while an unconfirmed tornado touched down in southeastern New Mexico.
The storms diminished in intensity overnight; however, another round of severe weather will develop over the High Plains tonight. Unlike this morning's storms, those that develop late this afternoon and tonight will hold together as they head east.
The strong storm threat on Wednesday will stretch from San Antonio, Texas, through Oklahoma City to Wichita, Kansas. By Wednesday evening, there will be potential for severe weather over the Arklatex region, which was battered by tornadoes less than a week ago.
AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist and Severe Weather Expert Henry Margusity said, "The number of tornadoes the first week of May (2008) could rival the 2003 outbreak where 349 tornadoes occurred. So far this month we have had nearly 100 tornado reports and over the next three days, we could add a significant number of tornadoes."
Another storm system moving into the northern Plains will create a threat of isolated strong storms this afternoon and evening with a few showers and thunderstorms across southeastern Texas. [5/6/08]
